How it Works
My approach to counseling works efficiently and deeply because it concentrates on three key elements:
Love. – All healing comes through empathy, deep attention and connection. I’ve cultivated my capacity to love through years of loving-kindness meditation. When we’re suffering and having a hard time connecting to the love in our own hearts, it can be enormously beneficial just to spend time with someone who is loving, present and attentive.
Truth. – We live in a culture pervaded by lies from corporations and politicians. We tell ourselves stories all the time just to get by within it. Sometimes these stories are helpful, but often they produce unnecessary stress and block us from hearing the guidance of our hearts. I’m a graduate of Byron Katie’s School for the Work, and deeply committed to holding the space for my clients to uncover truths that are at once uncomfortable and also revelatory. I do this through a process of compassionate inquiry that involves asking questions which help my clients to see their situations in dramatically different light.
Optimism. – What passes for optimism in most of American culture is actually a toxic form of denial. I hold and promote a different kind of optimism: optimism that looks squarely in the face of things that are difficult or terrifying, and becomes willing to believe that a solution can come about that’s enormously beautiful and beneficial for all. It’s my experience that with this deep form of optimism, real change happens quickly.
I work with clients through a process of compassionate inquiry.
Compassionate inquiry is a form of conversation designed to first uncover the stressful thoughts and beliefs that perpetuate suffering and then to gently question those thoughts and the assumptions that underlie them.
In the process of the conversation, it often happens that the mind lets go of its grip on the thoughts that it had previously attached to and identified with. This can result in a feeling of spaciousness and not-knowing. It can open up room in which new possibilities and new joy become available.
