The raw, hot, throbbing nerve underneath my low-cost coaching practice

I heart low-cost coaching and you. (image by ep.Sos.de, via Flickr Creative Commons)

Today, it’s my 28th birthday.

To celebrate, I’m launching a low-cost coaching practice.  How low-cost? It’s $25.00 per one hour session.

Why so cheap?

Don’t get me wrong– I don’t think $25.00 per session is anything to sneeze at.  It’s much higher than the minimum hourly wage here in the U.S. It’s more than I have hanging out in my couch cushions at this moment. But it’s a lot lower than the $100.00 or more per session that most coaches charge (including many I respect and love).

So what’s up with that? Does my coaching suck? Do I have low self-esteem? Am I on a bloody campaign to undercut other coaches? Why am I charging a quarter of what other folks do?

Well, to answer the two first questions– no, my coaching does not suck and my self-esteem is pretty damn great.  As I explained in connection to my amazing 99 cent book, for me, low-cost does not equal “suck.”  Low-cost equals “so much astounding wow offered at such small price that I’m actually giving a gift more than I’m selling a service.” Because I believe in the gift world.

In response to the third question– no, I’m not trying to undercut other coaches.  It’s just evident to me that at the price of $100 or more per session, the folks I’d have to be serving would be folks who have WAY more money than me or the great majority of my family and friends.  And that… doesn’t feel good to my heart right now.  I’m genuinely glad that other coaches out there are working to serve that group of people, because I don’t feel inclined to.

The politics of low-cost coaching

Maybe in coming years I’ll expand my equanimity and work out a different scheme in order to sustainably work with a wide range of folks, but for now I really want to work with the 90% of the 99% that makes about $30,000 or less per year.

The raw, throbbing nerve underneath my low-cost coaching practice is my dawning political consciousness– all the heart-rending stories simply stated on the We Are the 99% tumblr can give you a good idea of what I mean.

At times I tremble with anger about high-quality care of all sorts being priced out of the range of folks who need it, want it, deserve it.  So for 2012, I’m doing something about that.  I’m giving high-quality care at a price that’s accessible.  And if $25 a session is not accessible for you– don’t hesitate to write to me so we can work something else out.

The spirit of low-cost coaching

The spiritual motivation for my low-cost coaching practice is intimately related to the political motivation.  I’m becoming more and more drawn to the bodhisattva path– that path includes a vow to attain enlightenment not just for my own freedom but for the freedom of all other beings– and one of the primary ways that one fulfills that vow is by practicing generosity.  So, I’m practicing.

The joy of low-cost coaching

So, I’m hoping that if you don’t know me well already through this blog, you’ll take the time to dig around and see if we might jive.  If you’d like to work with me, I hope you’ll go ahead and schedule a session soon– I have space in my schedule for just 20 sessions per week.  Ideally, I’d like to have 20 on-going clients at one session per week– which is not a lot of people in the grand scheme of things– so come on in and grab a spot.

Love!

Carolyn

I think this is beautiful and brave, my dear. I’m terribly interested in how this works out for both you and the people you’re serving. Your reasoning is powerful and amazing – bless.
